Dorset Destroyers (a community group not a charity) are a wheelchair rugby club based in Parkstone, Poole.
Some of the players have significant life changing injuries and illnesses but the club means they can continue to play a sport they love and it’s great for their mental state too. Established three years ago it’s become one of the biggest Wheelchair Rugby Clubs in the UK. Popularity comes at a price – if you think a car tyre is dear, imagine what it’s like maintaining tyres and tubes for our specialist chairs! And, if the going gets rough, that can mean up to X changes per game! Hall, hire, chair maintenance, tyres, insurance, physio and more are just some of the costs they hope to off-set by fundraising. The team of helpers give their time generously - all they ask is that supporters give whatever they can to support that work. No donation is too small – every penny counts.
To that end, Dorset Destroyers are hosting a 24 hour Wheelchair Rugby Marathon, on Saturday 17th March.
If you are able to contribute with any donation to the just giving page at the bottom of this article or support with donations to the raffle it would be very much appreciated. Details of the event are available in the links toward the bottom of this article.
They are also looking out for any new players to get involved with the sport, if you know anyone who is disabled and are looking to get involved with the sport or would like any further information, get them to checkout the social media pages or they can contact the club owner Sue Coombs.
They are raising money for 3 parties involved, most of the money will go to the rugby club, a percentage will also go to the Royal Signals Benevolent Fund. The final one is a lady called Kath Ryan who runs a charity called cakes 4 casualties. Kath bakes cakes for injured military personnel, she has done this for over 8 years and travels all over the country and around the World with the Invictus team and other military events.
The 24 hour event will take place on Saturday 17th March 2018 at around 1400hrs. The warm up will start around an hour before the start of the game, which will be around 1300hrs. This is held at:
